These necklaces were made by encasing real ocean Kelp in recycled copper using a process called electroplating. We hung them from copper orbital chain and added our handmade infinity style clasps.
Kelp grows in “underwater forests” (kelp forests) in shallow oceans, and is thought to have appeared in the Miocene, 23 to 5 million years ago. They require nutrient-rich water with temperatures between 43 and 57 °F. Kelp is known for their high growth rate – some can grow as fast as 1.5 feet a day, ultimately reaching 100 to 260 ft. These seaweeds absorb CO2 in the water and make it less acidic.
But its important to note that Kelp is in danger because of things like climate change and pollution. Find out more about kelp and how you can help here.
Electroplating (or electroforming) is a process where we take copper from a sacrificial anode and deposit it onto our organic material using an electrical current. There really is a piece of seaweed in these earrings.
They come shipped in a Kraft gift box for sweet gift giving and safe shipping.
